Updating Iconic with Warby Parker

“Tucked inside our Grand Central Terminal location is the first-of-its-kind Warby Parker Solarium, an illuminated nook specially made for trying on sunglasses. This bright spot combined with a dozen colorful Marleigh Culver murals make this store a cheerful oasis for city dwellers, commuters, and far-flung visitors alike.” –Warby Parker

Imprinting New York History

A year ago in February 2019, the team at Warby Parker contacted me about a project to do with one of New York City’s iconic destinations, Grand Central Terminal. It’s a place I personally love as an iconic destination because it means I get to leave the city by train and breathe real air for once. This project came at a time where I was getting ready to go on a trip to Thailand, questioning my life while working at a top retailer, and hitting a milestone in a personal relationship. Epic timing was an understatement, and this was a totally large undertaking.

Warby Parker is a brand that I’ve always enjoyed following, it has felt personal and inclusive, and I have so much admiration for all their artists collaborations and recognition. It feels so cool to be on the same level as many of my favorite artists, and that we have all contributed to one story in our own way.

It was an honor to work on the newly built Grand Central Terminal store, my objectives were to create a mural on the large curved wall at the entrance of the store, and side panels designs on the outside. The theme, of course, was subtle references to eyes, glasses, and anything people enjoying looking at. So it was fun to use my style to create a bright and eye-catching space for such a great brand. ※
